This week I got to try my hand(s) at a new winter sport, ice climbing. It was really cool to do something different and discover another way in which people explore the mountains in the colder months. As a plus I enjoyed it. Being a very in the moment sport it is neat to change between sports like ski touring and ice climbing where they require very opposite states of mind. Definitely no day dreaming when you are trying to hold on to two tools with all of your might because you are so pumped. I certainly tired myself out. … Read more
Vantage Peak
I found a new favourite view on January 27th. My dad, my mum and I left our house Saturday morning for the duffy. At the trailhead parking lot for Cerise Creek we counted 15 cars. Our goal was to summit Vantage Peak. I had previously skied on the lower flank and my mum and dad had been to the top in the 90s. Being a pretty easy peak to reach, and with lots of traffic on the lower section, I wasn’t expecting a hard day. Having brought our dog, Cola, she jumped out of the van as soon as we … Read more
Cayoosh Mountain
On January 14th 2019, I was able to stand on top of a mountain that I have wanted to for a long time. Cayoosh mountain. It was on the list of things I wanted to do before Logan and I tried to summit it once before, read about it here https://www.naomiprohaska.com/2017/03/25/cayoosh-cols/ I have been tobogganing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and cross country skiing around Cayoosh since I was a baby. In recent years I have started ski touring there, but I had never been to it’s top. Last night we decided to go for it because the avalanche hazard fit and it … Read more
Mt. Rohr
January 7th held the best skiing I’ve had since spring of 2017. In the days leading up to it my dad and I were looking at the weather forecasts and avalanche bulletins to try and plan a great day. The weather looked like it would be sunny and cold, but the avalanche ratings were considerable. Talking about many options with my dad, some were very close to home, some off of Whistler Blackcomb and some on the Duffy. I wanted to go to the top of a mountain so Mt. Rohr was what we agreed upon. In winter of 2017 … Read more
Not Quite Wonderland
On the second day of 2019 I set out on my first day ski touring of the year. My dad and I left our house at 9am and drove down the road for less than five minutes. Arriving at the Spetch Creek Forestry Road it was really neat to be going to a place so close to home. We hopped on our old snowmobile and set off up the road. Having to check the map in the beginning after a wrong fork we soon found ourselves in front of a fallen tree. It was a small tree and my dad … Read more
